Prepaid Cards 101- A definitive guide for growth and profitability

Launched on August 2nd, 2021, at 4.30 pm, e-RUPI was developed by the National Payments Corporation of India on its UPI platform. It is a contactless and <a class="link" href="https://m2pfintech.com/blog/ready-to-sneak-peek-into-global-cashless-societies/">cashless</a> instrument for digital payment. The Department of National Health Authority, Ministry of Health &amp; Family Welfare and the Department of Financial Services have also collaborated with NPCI in formulating and launching this solution.<blockquote class="block-node" id="bta04v1ef">E-RUPI signifies how 21st century India is moving ahead with the help of modern technology and connecting technology with people’s lives,” says prime minister Narendra Modi</blockquote>The primary application of e-RUPI is to disperse welfare payments to the right beneficiaries using a one-time payment mechanism. It eliminates the need for middlemen and connects the program sponsors and beneficiaries directly. It is similar to a digital gift card and requires no bank account, smartphone or <a class="link" href="https://m2pfintech.com/blog/the-rise-of-digital-payments/">digital payment</a> app. It is a person and purpose-specific payment initiative.<h2 class="heading-node" id="76de" style="text-align: justify">How e-RUPI works?</h2>e-RUPI is a one-time payment mechanism delivered as a QR code or an SMS string to the beneficiary’s mobile number. It works more like a prepaid gift card that can be redeemed only at specific service provider touchpoints.Also, the system ensures that the service provider is paid only after the beneficiary completes the transaction. Being <a class="link" href="https://m2pfintech.com/blog/how-to-implement-the-best-prepaid-payment-instrument-ppi-for-your-business/">a prepaid payment instrument (PPI), t</a>he service provider is also assured of the payment. There is no need to follow any intermediary for payment transfer.It doesn’t require any debit or <a class="link" href="https://m2pfintech.com/blog/credit-card-processing-a-definitive-guide/">credit card</a> for its function. In short, e-RUPI is all set to connect beneficiaries and sponsors digitally, minus the need for a physical interface.Built on NPCI’s UPI platform, e-RUPI has onboarded banks as issuing entities. So, it sparked speculation that e-RUPI might be a trail leading to CBDC.But there exists a rudimentary difference between the two. e-RUPI is an e-voucher based system that disburses money as it is still supported by the existing Indian rupee. And the Indian government had lost many millions in welfare payments alone.But, then, the introduction of Aadhar-linked subsidy let the government transfer directly to the beneficiary’s bank account. This was termed as Direct Benefit Transfer. But this also resulted in a roadblock as there are millions of underbanked and unbanked population in India.However, the percentage of mobile penetration has been impressive, so this voucher-based system will help the government reach the right beneficiary without any deviations in the system.e-RUPI will plug leakages in the welfare delivery system and can be adapted to other welfare schemes such as Mother and Child welfare schemes, drugs and diagnostics under schemes like Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, fertilizer subsidies and so on.Given e-RUPI’s mission to plug in the leakages of the welfare system, the use cases can be expanded to many situations. All legal and financial institutions must validate their customers to prevent any illegal or fraudulent activities as per Reserve Bank of India’s norms.&nbsp; Under the guidance of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA), the RBI mandates that all banks and financial institutions implement KYC procedures.&nbsp; KYC starts with verifying Proof of Identity (POI) and the Proof of Address (POA) and by which banks, insurance companies, and other organizations obtain information and better understand their customers. It is applicable for both new and existing customers and is the first step in account creation or even to allow a transaction.&nbsp;<h2 class="heading-node" id="9083">Why is KYC mandatory?</h2>As per the Reserve Bank of India’s mandatory regulation, KYC came into legal effect in 2002. The RBI mandates that all financial and legal institutions should assess their customers.&nbsp; KYC’s objective is to help banks and other financial institutions to assess and validate their customers. An effective KYC alleviates and combats all illicit activities. In a nutshell, a financial institution or a business/corporate uses KYC for,&nbsp;<ul class="list-node" id="32oq3a921"><li>Building and Verifying a Customer’s Identity&nbsp;</li><li>Understanding Customer’s Activities&nbsp;</li><li>Evaluating the risks involved with the Customer’s Activities</li></ul><h2 class="heading-node" id="2ff5">How does KYC work?</h2>The KYC process is carried out seamlessly with the following simple steps:&nbsp;<ul class="list-node" id="pce88galo"><li>First, the applicant’s PAN/ AADHAR details are collected and validated.&nbsp;</li><li>The applicant further supports the information provided by entering the required details on the website.&nbsp;</li><li>The applicant’s document goes through various checks and authentication processes by the financial entity.&nbsp;</li><li>Once the documents are verified, and once named eligible, then the applicants are onboarded.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li></ul><h2 class="heading-node" id="23fe">Evolution of KYC</h2>Back in 2002, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) made KYC a legal and mandatory procedure for all financial institutions, preventing misuse of the sensitive information held by banks and restricting money laundering activities. Evolving from a Paper-based physical attestation method to video adoption, KYC has come a long way. The paper-based KYC demands more physical input because of various document requirements. In contrast, the e-KYC makes the verification procedure less complicated by reducing the physical work of businesses and clients where the data is stored and verified entirely online.&nbsp;&nbsp; The e-KYC or paperless KYC verification procedure became more preferred by customers once the internet boomed. Now doing e-KYC is made even more accessible as the Government of India has launched Digi Locker under its Digital India initiative. It is a digital document wallet that helps its users to store authentic documents virtually and is highly secured by Aadhaar/OTP authentication.<h2 class="heading-node" id="5fbe">Types of KYC</h2><img src="https://m2p-website-file.s3.ap-south-1.amazonaws.com/m2p-website-file/marketing-cms/m2p-blog/2022/05/Wordpress-03.webp" alt="M2P Fintech" title="" width="100%" height="284"><h3 class="heading-node" id="ympukq7zn">1. Aadhaar-based KYC</h3>Aadhaar-based KYC verification follows the regulations of The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and verifies proof of identity and residence through one’s Aadhaar number. In addition, the UIDAI provides information to service providers to activate customer services such as bank accounts, mobile connections, etc.&nbsp; Every Aadhaar cardholder can quickly and easily complete their KYC process. Aadhaar based KYC is an efficient, paperless process that adheres with government standards.&nbsp; The Aadhaar based KYC authenticates data in two different ways:&nbsp; OTP-based  - The financial institution verifies the customers’ identity by triggering an OTP to their Aadhaar linked mobile number.&nbsp;&nbsp; Biometric-based  - For Identification and Verification, the financial institution uses the biometrics of the customer by using UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) approved scanners.<h3 class="heading-node" id="ebxjgryx3">2. In-Person Verification (IPV) KYC</h3>The In-person KYC procedure was used by the Security and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for mutual fund investors. Unlike the other prevalent methods, in-person verification requires the individual to undergo the process offline in an institution, KYC kiosk, or at an AMC. IPV has now upgraded their process via OTP mechanism.<h3 class="heading-node" id="31fd">3. Digital KYC</h3>It is a paperless process where a live photo of the client and their Aadhaar is verified and processed online. It also involves submitting the Official Valid Documents (OVD’s) such as Aadhaar, Pan Card, Passport or a Driver’s license.&nbsp; The digital KYC techniques have many advantages such as,&nbsp;<ul class="list-node" id="pewatsdgk"><li>The customer’s identity verification happens in real-time,&nbsp;</li><li>The process is flexible because the customer can use any of the OVDs,&nbsp;</li><li>The process is highly secure and efficient due to privacy laws and the usage of AI technology.&nbsp;</li></ul><h3 class="heading-node" id="0da4">4. Video KYC</h3>RBI allowed the usage of Video KYC in 2020 due to the pandemic constraints. Video KYC is a procedure that verifies details of the client in a video-based process. This process involves an auditor and an agent for authentication and audit. Before establishing an account-based relationship, the agent collects the details using video-audio features and AI technology. The process is smoothened by usage of a number placard that helps authenticating the customer.&nbsp;&nbsp; Video KYC is available as:&nbsp;<ul class="list-node" id="dd9lh3yyz"><li>VCIP - Video-based Customer Identification Process&nbsp;</li><li>VIPV - Video-based In-Person Verification&nbsp;</li><li>VBIP - Video-based Identification Process&nbsp;</li></ul>&nbsp;It employs a trained individual’s audio-video interaction and automated verification methods such as geo-tagging and facial matching.&nbsp;<h3 class="heading-node" id="4d8e">5.&nbsp;Central KYC (CKYC)</h3>CKYC is a customer or financial institution submitting a Central KYC form and proof of identity and proof of address that relies on the central repository of customer records for CERSAI (Central Registry of Securitization Asset Reconstruction and Security Interest of India). The process detects any duplicate accounts and mitigates other risks.&nbsp; The C-KYC identifier is a 14-digit unique identifier assigned to a client when they upload their details for KYC. When a client opens an account without C-KYC, it may require them to repeat the whole process. But this 14-digit identifier removes that need, and the customer can use this number to update their information throughout all their accounts uniformly.<h3 class="heading-node" id="4feb">6. In-app KYC&nbsp;</h3>This KYC process brings out easy and hassle-free experiences to the customers. All the verification process happens with the help of a smartphone, where the clients can conveniently carry out bank transactions, open bank accounts, and other banking operations.&nbsp; The clients need to use their smartphones to verify their IDs or passport and begin the KYC process. The KYC also involves real-time scanning of IDs to prevent identity forgeries. It is highly secure due to the deployment of secure technologies.<h3 class="heading-node" id="a37c">7. Offline KYC</h3>Offline KYC requires the submission of all the necessary physical documents for verification. It requires filling in all the required details like Aadhaar and PAN. After this, the client must visit a nearby KRA to complete the process and receive an official application number to identify and continue the verification process. Or an agent is sent to the customer’s place to collect documents for KYC verification.<h2 class="heading-node" id="649c">So, what is KRA?</h2>KRAs are KYC Registration Agencies that maintain the SEBI (Security and Exchange Board of India) registered companies records under the KYC regulations Act, 2011. Know Your Customer (KYC): The Need for Authentication

Lekha is a wonder woman who handles the responsibility of being a mom and client implementations for M2P like a pro. In addition, she loves doing DIY projects in her free time.<h2 class="heading-node" id="2671">What happens in your typical day at M2P?</h2>My day usually begins by listing the work I have for the day, including pending and upcoming work. It helps me set priorities. I always have a habit of religiously reviewing the projects that usually have a high volume of transactions. Then I move on to the pending tasks and then finally, the upcoming tasks of the day. My simple premise is to ensure that my work moves forward minus the glitch and complications.<h2 class="heading-node" id="2029">What do you do at M2P?</h2>Currently, I am part of the implementation team, and my role starts right from gathering the client’s requirements to understand how the integration process should be set. I also must set up the mock environment to iron out the kinks we encounter during the process.Once the process is complete, I will sign off on the go-live procedures and share them with the client. Then again, I will do the same process, but it will be in the Live environment and do necessary checks all over again.If all is well, I will be monitoring every checklist like customer onboarding, KYC process, transactions (POS/E-com/ATM, etc..), notification, portal access behavior. I will also be liaising with our internal Operations teams and watch out for potential red flags.In a word, I would have to be the bridge between the client and the team to ensure the smooth rollout of the program.<h2 class="heading-node" id="54fd">Being the first employee, how has your experience been all these years?</h2>To sum it up in one word, it is “Awesome.” I have been through challenges that made me pull an all-nighter. But when the issue is fixed, and you get appreciation from both colleagues and clients, that’s worth missing sleep.We had very limited resources back those days, and as I was the first hire, I witnessed things firsthand. Of course, we were in a nascent stage, and I have donned many hats back then. But our flexibility to accommodate client’s requirements coupled with work ownership resulted in great products and long-standing clients.I have been here for a long time since it was a first-year start-up. I am inspired by M2P (Madhu, Muthu, Prabhu), and they have been instrumental in driving its growth. And the main reason would be that it feels like family rather than a workspace.<h2 class="heading-node" id="87ee">Can you give me a quick recap of your journey at M2P?</h2>I started out as a fresher and was the only employee. So, I have handled all types of work starting from SQL queries, developing Android mobile apps, App testing, vendor coordination, etc. This helped me in strengthening my multitasking skills, and Prabhu always encouraged me to learn. In fact, he is my first guru, and Muthu taught me to go straight to the logs anytime I have a hiccup at work.He never accepts the assumptions and always says, “Log is a source of truth.” That mantra helps me both professionally and personally.My testing capabilities helped me learn the nuances of the payment industry. I am proud to say that in my journey from Trainee to AVP, I have had my share of good and bad experiences. And my bad experiences helped me reinforce my learning.When I saw one of our best solutions live, it was an unforgettable moment that I relive often. Today I am experiencing that moment often, and I am very proud of our company’s journey.<h2 class="heading-node" id="2030">Being a new mom, how are you managing work and home?</h2>It is really tough, so I try to complete all my household work before 9.30. Sometimes my daughter will sleep on my shoulder while I am working. And she observes what I do; whenever my mom asks her, “What is Amma (mom) doing?”&nbsp;she will say,&nbsp;“Amma, hello,helloo laptoppp.”Likewise, the other day I was on a call with a client, and I was walking up to her. Immediately she kept her palm near her ear and started mimicking by saying&nbsp;“yeah, yeahhhhh,”&nbsp;like how I talk. My whole family was shocked, and we burst out laughing. It is a great experience as I can enjoy working and motherhood.<h2 class="heading-node" id="3e27">Has COVID altered your working style?</h2> Yes, having a toddler and working is a bit challenging at times. However, I really miss my colleagues and our interactions. My husband is also in WFH mode, and given my loud voice (laughs), he faces trouble in handling his calls. So, we have decided to keep our workspace as far as we can from each other. It is good entertainment too.<h2 class="heading-node" id="f540">What are your other interests?</h2>I love cooking, gardening, taking on DIY projects<h2 class="heading-node" id="0359">Have you played a practical joke in college?</h2>Yes,, there are a lot. For example, I have teamed up with my hostel mates to get snacks from the hostel kitchen. And once I put a lot of salt into my warden’s lunch just because she made fun of me for missing home. And the list of pranks is just endless.<h2 class="heading-node" id="9f74">What’s that one thing your colleagues don’t know about you?</h2>I am highly short-tempered, not many people have experienced it, but I am. Fast-forward to 2007, the arrival of a Payment Service Directive 1 (PSD1), harmonized payment services regulation and increased competition among financial service providers in the EU.The primary aim of PSD was to harmonize consumer protection with the rights and obligations of payment service providers and users. It established an integrated payments market that offered best-in-class security and infrastructure to the end users.&nbsp;PSD also allowed countries to include sections that are explicitly valid for their payment industry. It was released as legislation on November 1st, 2009, and accepted by all EU and EEA member states.However, even though PSD offered a comprehensive framework, it was not inclusive when considering international payments outside the European Union (EU). Furthermore, it was not designed for TSPs in its scope.These bottlenecks led the EU to build a more robust framework for this directive, which resulted in Payment Service Directive 2 (PSD2). It came into force on January 13th, 2018 with new rights for certain third-party providers (TPPs) to directly access online payment accounts with explicit customer consent through the bank's dedicated interface (built on APIs).Customer authentication is the main element of PSD2, and it encompasses the following points:<ul class="list-node" id="4wrs9fhmn"><li>Strengthen customer trust by deploying the highest standards of security</li><li>Offer a better pricing model to the consumers</li><li>Make transactions safe and secure</li><li>Level the playing field for payment service providers for both current upcoming players</li><li>Transparency in payment services</li></ul>Since this legislation has been out and about, many fintech, merchants, and tech players have been vigorously channeling their resources in becoming TPPs. PSD2 categorizes the TPPs into two categories.1.
